Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
