England and Welsh Placed Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
